How to make a Mercer Island island: The Long Island’s answer to the Big Apple
Mercer Islands, located off the coast of Long Island, New York, is an island of just over 3,000 acres with a population of more than 300 people.
The island was founded by Robert Mercer, a man who spent a lifetime building a small, one-man shack in the woods on Mercer’s family’s property.
A few years later, Robert Mercers wife died of cancer and his son, James, took over the reins.
Mercer eventually sold the property to his son in 1911, and the island became known as the Mercer House.
The family kept it up as a resort until World War II, when it was used for military training.
Mercers family eventually passed away in 1959, and many of the island’s original structures were demolished and left behind for good.
The Mercer house, however, remained.
For more than 100 years, the Mercers property has been an important part of Long Islanders culture.
Now, thanks to the National Park Service, visitors can see Mercer island for the first time.
“The Mercer estate is a National Park, and we’re proud to be able to provide visitors with a look at the heritage of the Mercedez Islands and its people and culture,” said Park Superintendent Linda E. McBride.
“It’s a great opportunity for visitors to see this part of the country where our ancestors came to live and work before their time.”
The National Park Conservancy also donated a portion of the land to the city of Long Beach in order to preserve it as a park, with plans to restore it to its original state in 2028.
Visitors can take a guided tour of the grounds and the restored Mercer Mansion, where the family kept a private kitchen.
The park has a number of activities to offer visitors, including hiking, fishing, and horseback riding.
