How to Get to Kythira

Kythira is a peaceful Greek island that remains easy to reach. You can arrive by air, sea, or even by car via ferry, depending on where you start your journey.

By Air
Kythira Island National Airport (KIT) has regular flights from Athens (ATH) operated by Olympic Air / Aegean Airlines.
Flight time is approximately 45 minutes.
During the summer season, there are also occasional flights from Kalamata and Crete.
The airport is located about 20 minutes from Chora, and car rentals are available on arrival.

By Sea (Ferry)
Ferries connect Kythira with the Greek mainland and nearby islands:

  • Neapoli (Peloponnese) – the closest and most frequent route, about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • Piraeus (Athens) – two to three times per week, travel time around 6.5 to 7 hours.

  • Kissamos (Crete) – a summer route connecting Crete, Antikythira, Kythira, and Neapoli.

  • Gythio and Kalamata – occasional routes during the tourist season.

All ferries are car ferries, which means you can bring your own vehicle or a rental car.

By Car + Ferry
You can reach Kythira by car using the same routes as the ferries, since all of them transport vehicles.
The most popular option is to drive from Athens to Neapoli (about 4.5 hours) and take the short ferry crossing to the island.
This option gives you full flexibility and allows you to explore Kythira’s beaches and villages at your own pace.

Local Connections
Once on Kythira, ferries also operate to Antikythira, Kissamos (Crete), and Neapoli, making short island trips possible.

Travel Tips
Because Kythira is not a mass-tourism island, ferry and flight schedules may vary by season.
It is recommended to book tickets in advance, especially in July and August.
